Feeding Time

A good Samaritan brought in a Red-tail Hawk found standing by the side of the road.  Evelyn determined the injuries, which luckily were minor.  The raptor then did a  quick recovery at DVWR and released into the Nevada sky!

A bit of history on the raptor — Peregrine Falcons were nearly wiped out from pesticide poisoning in eastern North America during the middle of the 20th century, the Peregrine made a come back through the captive breeding efforts of professional falconers.

Seen in the daytime more often than other owls, it was a brief stay for this Short-eared Owl.

During an overnight rainstorm a large cottonwood tree fell across a swiftly flowing ditch in Fallon. The next morning a passing bicyclist noticed a injured hawk on the downed tree and notified Department of Wildlife. A Red-tailed Hawk will be released in early 2014.  Injured on Highway 395 in Douglas County, NV., the Red-tailed Hawk successfully recovered at Dayton Valley Wildlife Reststop.
